My Son's Prom Date has Arrived!
Hi Ladies--
I've had the great fortune of sharing this pregnancy with my good friend and former roommate from college...first pregnancy for both of us. Coincidentally, both of our pregnancies were due to IVF and our due dates were exactly 5 weeks apart. Susie has no ovaries, as she is a two-time ovarian cancer survivor. Her IVF baby (along with remaining frozen embryos) were created 7-8 years ago prior to the removal of her ovaries. Our concurrent pregnancies were not planned that way at all, just the way it worked out.
"Susie" and I are VERY different people: she was valedictorian, is very accomplishment-oriented, I'm more of a creative, artsy type who fancies being efficient and productive in my own ways. Example: Susie has her doctorate and a cleaning lady....I have a freezer full of homemade meals and I am my own cleaning lady. Completely different lifestyles and outllooks on life...but understanding of one another and very good friends despite it all. Parenting will be no different...Example: I cannot wait to breastfeed and Susie can't imagine why anyone would put a baby on their breast. We're SOOOOO different, yet we're emotionally very close to one another. I wouldn't want it any other way!
Susie was expecting a girl and I am expected a boy...so we've decided they can be each other's prom dates if need be. Leave it to my little guy to fancy an "older woman." Haha. Given that Susie went late, and my c-section is scheduled at 38.5 weeks, our babies will be 2.5 weeks apart instead of 5.
Susie's due date was October 5th and she was induced on Monday, October 12th. Almost two weeks ago, Susie's baby girl was estimated to be 9 lbs (+/- 1 lb.) and her OB gave her a 25% chance of a vaginal birth due to Susie's narrow pelvis. The induction got off to a good start, and then both epidurals didn't work! OUCH! Ultimately, baby girl arrived via c-section, weighing in at 8 lbs, 15 oz. and 20" long. The baby is healthy and beautiful.
Unfortunately, Susie's c-section took almost 3 hours, as her bowel was "nicked" and it had to be repaired. (I should mention, she has had several pelvic surgeries...hence scar tissue, adhesions, etc. made her c-section more risky.) She needed 2 blood transfusions and her hosptial stay is expected to be a week long. Her OB's suggestion is that Susie not attempt another pregnancy because her uterus didn't have the elasticity it needed and a future pregnancy would be even riskier. The good news is that a surrogate could be implanted with the embryo(s) should Susie and her husband want to add to their family.
So, basically, Susie's precious baby is here but her mom has had a rough journey and has a lot to process. I've been consumed with thinking good thoughts and sending them her way. I'm already cooking up a storm in hopes of stocking their fridge/freezer with homemade goods when I visit early next week.

Paula- sounds like you are a wonderful friend. We need more good GF in the world. I am glad that she is okay- and the road to recovery has begun. I think that being opposites in someways is what helps friendships. I know I have a very close friend at work...she likes folk art-I love modern looks, she's very politically opinionated- I am not, she's super smart (great grades)-I struggled in school (very hands on), she's can be sloppy (AH her Desk)- I m very organized....but I know together we are a force. LOL I will keep your friend in my thoughts...and just wait, your baby time is coming!
After everything your friend has been through with 2x ovarian cancer, I'm glad she was able to experience her pregnancy and delivery - sucky though it was to have the c-section w/complications. Science and technology now days is amazing what they can do. Pass my good wishes to her for a speedy recovery.
